Your first safari packing list (without overpacking)
Neutral colors, one good layer, and a bag that fits under the seat — everything else is optional. Here is what actually matters on your first game drive.
Your first safari does not need a new wardrobe. It needs comfort, sun protection, and a camera you will actually use. Everything else is negotiable.
Clothing that works
Stick to neutral tones — khaki, olive, stone. Bright white and neon colors can distract wildlife (and your fellow travelers in photos). Layers beat one heavy jacket: mornings are cold, afternoons warm up fast.
- Light long-sleeve shirt (sun + insects)
- Comfortable walking shoes or trainers
- Soft scarf or buff for dust
- One warm fleece for dawn drives

What to leave at home
You do not need formal dinner wear at most bush camps. Leave the hard-shell suitcase if you are on a small plane — soft duffels fit better in cargo holds.
Small things that save the day
- Reusable water bottle (many lodges refill)
- Lip balm with SPF — the sun is real
- Power bank for bumpy roads
- Copies of passport and insurance offline
That is it. Show up rested, curious, and ready to put the phone down for an hour when the light is golden.
