What we wish someone told us before Kilimanjaro

It is a trek, not a sprint. Pace, hydration, and honest fitness expectations matter more than gear brands.

What we wish someone told us before Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro is achievable for many fit hikers — but altitude does not care about your gym PR. Respect the mountain and it will meet you halfway.

Pace wins

“Pole pole” (slowly, slowly) is not a cliché. It is the strategy. The group that rushes to camp often struggles on summit night.

Hydration and snacks

Drink more than you think you need. Salty snacks help when appetite drops above 4,000m. Tell your guide early if a headache will not shift.

Gear without the gear panic

  • Broken-in boots — non-negotiable
  • Rent a good down jacket in Arusha if you are not a repeat cold-weather traveler
  • Headlamp with fresh batteries
  • Two pairs of socks per day beats one “premium” pair

Summit night is hard. The sunrise makes the memory. Train your legs, sleep well the week before, and choose an operator who prioritizes safety over speed.
